ONE PERSON IN THE 60s FASCINATED ME MORE THAN ANYBODY I'D EVER KNOWN. -- ANDY WARHOL
The Chelsea was home to Warhol Factory Superstar Edie Sedgwick and a primary shoot location of Warhol's film The Chelsea Girls. In '66, Edie set fire to #105 and soon vanished from NYC.
In 2011, gentrification made 105 vanish. Until now.
In late 1966 Edie Sedgwick checked into Hotel Chelsea, a legendary 'Rest Stop For Rare Individuals', with entourage that included one of the art world's top influencers, Andy Warhol. There, she occupied Suite #105, set it on fire, and pined over former tenant Bob Dylan.
In 2008, Suite 105 was targeted for demolition. Protests halted the destruction but by 2011 it resumed and disbelieving tenants salvaged relics of POP history. Notably, a former tenant of Hotel Chelsea found 105's door discarded on the sidewalk and sold it for charity.
In 2015, Suite 105 serendipitously merged with that of 30-year tenant Rick Librizzi, host of Warhol's first show.
